Voluntary social investment by category (£’000s)

BG Group closely defines the meaning of the term ‘voluntary social investment’. We exclude from this category any form of core business activity such as local hiring or contracting as well as any investment primarily for the purpose of public relations or brand promotion, such as events sponsorship.

In 2009, our total voluntary social investment expenditure declined by 17% year-on-year. This reported reduction reflects our decision to withdraw from non-strategic social investment projects.

In line with our strategy to move from philanthropic to strategic social investment, the year-on-year reduction is derived from the charitable donations and miscellaneous categories, while our regional development contribution has increased.
