Scope 1 emissions

GHG emissions: by source(a) (million tonnes CO2e) for the years 2005 to 2009

Scope 1 emissions are those arising directly from our activities, the main source categories being fuel use, flaring, venting, fugitive losses and distribution losses. In 2009, assets directly under the control of BG Group emitted 8.6 million tonnes of CO2e, a decrease of 189 000 tonnes (2%) compared to 2008. This decrease is mainly a result of reduced demand for our product at our Northern Ireland power station, reduced journey lengths (and therefore reduced emissions) from our operated vessels in LNG shipping operations and the effects of our GHG management programmes. The decrease is partly offset by increases from the acquisition of QGC.

The Group also measures CO2e emissions on an equity-share basis, reporting those emissions as a proportion of the total in line with the Group’s equity interest in the operations not under its control. Equity-share emissions from BG Group-operated and non-operated activities increased by 33 000 tonnes (0.2%) to 13.9 million tonnes CO2e compared to 2008.
