Climate Change

BG Egypt - Rosseta platform

Our Sustainability Report summarises key aspects of BG Group's implementation of our Business Principles. It also provides an overview of our response to the most significant issues identified through our engagement with external stakeholders and our internal risk management process. These selected topics provide supplementary material for those with a more specific interest.

At BG Group, we fully acknowledge that climate change is a reality, and that man-made emissions from burning fossil fuels contribute to global warming. We also believe that the extended use of natural gas over other fossil fuels has a positive role to play. As the lowest carbon fossil fuel, the combustion of gas releases 22% less carbon dioxide than oil and 40% less than coal.

BG Group recognises it has a responsibility to minimise its own emissions of greenhouse gases: in 2007 we set ourselves a target of one million tonnes of sustainable reductions by 2012. Our annual Sustainability Report details our progress towards this target reduction.

We fund new research to provide guidance on mitigating our potential environmental impact where insufficient data is available, and mandate the use of best practice in our developments and operations and work towards certification under the ISO 14001 International Environmental Standard at all of our major operational assets. We are also pursuing the potential of using carbon capture and storage as a means of reducing carbon levels in the atmosphere, and are assessing other low-carbon opportunities to complement our operations.
