Security of supply

  • Gas is available and accessible - gas is found within economically viable reach of leading import markets e.g. Europe, USA.

  • LNG extends the reach of gas to most countries worldwide.

  • Gas is technologically and economically available to fill energy gaps right now.

  • Gas is the cleanest hydrocarbon - it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions when substituted for other hydrocarbon fuels.

Natural gas plays an important role in providing secure and reliable energy.

At BG Group, we work to find alignment between our business and our government partners' agendas, helping to provide secure, sustainable energy supplies. We have developed a flexible gas supply portfolio which allows us to help meet demand as it arises, from Europe and North America, to South America and East Asia.

Governments around the world today are concerned about how to meet their energy needs, when the availability and security of traditional supplies seem increasingly in doubt. Energy demand is growing, driven by development in emerging economies; for example, China and India are expected to account for up to 45 percent of new energy demand by 2030. At the same time that demand is growing, traditional supplies are in decline, and new sources of energy are often located in geographically, geologically or geopolitically challenging places:

  • Oil production is declining in many producing areas such as the UK Continental Shelf, Norway and Mexico.

  • Many resource-holding governments are becoming more assertive about their control of their energy resources.

  • There is increasing concern about the disruption of supply chains by terrorism or political action.

  • New sources of supply often pose technical challenges: Arctic conditions; remoteness; ultra-deep water; difficult terrains that take longer to exploit.

At BG Group, we approach this challenge by taking time and effort to understand the agendas of our partners in government. We realise that governments often have different priorities for using their energy supplies, be it to promote social and economic development in their own countries or to target value from external exports. By understanding governments’ priorities, we are able to align our business with their goals, to provide sustainable advantages and promote growth and development.

BG Group brings new supplies to market, with an upstream portfolio that ranges from from Kazakhstan to Brazil. Our flexible Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supply portfolio enables us to meet demand as it arises around the globe and we are currently developing new LNG infrastructure and capabilities in high-demand regions from Europe to South America.

Case Study – BG Egypt

EgyptBG Egypt works with the government to develop the country’s gas reserves. These are used to supply the domestic market, thereby driving economic development, as well generating export revenue through the export of LNG. This flexible approach has enabled Egypt to grow its domestic gas markets, has improved air quality in Cairo and has generated export revenue at the same time.

Case Study – BG Trinidad and Tobago

BG Trinidad and TobagoBG Trinidad and Tobago developed the expertise acquired in Egypt to work with the government to develop their offshore gas reserves. The reserves are sold into the domestic market as well as LNG facilities enabling gas to be sold into international markets.
