Liquefied Natural Gas - an enabling technology

Natural gas is converted to LNG by cooling it to -161° C, at which point it becomes a liquid. This process reduces its volume by a factor of more than 600 - similar to reducing the volume of a beach ball to the volume of a ping-pong ball, which allows natural gas to be transported efficiently by sea.

Once it reaches its market, the LNG is unloaded and stored until it is needed, when it is warmed and converted back to a gas. The natural gas is then sent through pipelines for distribution to businesses and homeowners.

BG Group has developed a leading position in the global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry, based upon flexible long-term supply contracts and a fleet of modern LNG ships that are able to meet the needs of a rapidly changing market.

This flexible portfolio means that BG Group is able to deliver gas where and when it is most needed, capturing value for our suppliers, customers and BG Group.

We have established a strong position in the Atlantic Basin, founded on supply positions in Egypt and Trinidad that in turn feed demand in the USA, Asia Pacific and Europe. BG Group supplied about 50% of all gas transported into the Pacific Basin from the Atlantic Basin in 2007. We are currently enhancing our sales portfolio, with new sales contracts to Singapore and Brazil. We are also developing innovative LNG supply capacity through our partnership with Queensland Gas Company in Australia.

BG LNG tankerLNG has transformed the gas industry in more ways than one.  The ability to transport gas across the world has enabled the growth of international gas markets – but it also has significant environmental benefits too, because it promotes the use of gas, the lowest carbon fossil fuel.

LNG fast facts

  • LNG is not stored or transported under high pressure - only 2 to 3 pounds per square inch (psi)

  • LNG is an odourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive liquid. If spilled, LNG would not result in a hydrocarbon "slick". Without an ignition source, LNG evaporates quickly and disperses into the atmosphere, leaving no residue

  • Natural gas and LNG are composed primarily of methane (80% - 99%) and also contain small quantities of ethane, propane and heavier hydrocarbons, as well as other minor substance

  • During the last 45 years, LNG ships have traveled more than 100,000,000 miles without a major accident or significant loss of cargoes
