Notes to Editors
BG 's LNG business combines the development and use
of LNG export and import facilities with the business
of purchasing, shipping and selling LNG.
By applying its extensive experience from the Atlantic LNG
export project in Trinidad and Tobago, BG is at the forefront
of low cost development of LNG export facilities. BG continues
to focus on the application of appropriate technologies and
construction methods in the LNG business, primarily in the
completion of Atlantic Trains 2 and 3 and through the development
of its planned LNG project in Egypt.
BG seeks to use its LNG expertise to deliver its equity
gas reserves to market and is selectively developing
access to gas markets for these reserves via LNG importation
facilities. In the USA, BG LNG Services, LLC has contracted
all of the uncommitted capacity at the Lake Charles importation
terminal for 22 years beginning in January 2002, while
in India and Italy, BG is pursuing greenfield LNG importation
projects.
BG has a long history in LNG shipping, and its activities
in this area are directed to meet the needs of BG projects.
In addition to owning two LNG carriers that are committed
on a long-term basis to a third party, BG has charters
over four carriers that are contracted to both long-and
short-term trades. To add to its shipping fleet, BG has
agreed to the delivery of a new 138 000 cubic metre LNG
carrier which is due to enter service in the second quarter
of 2004 and has secured separate options for a further
six new carriers which, if exercised, would provide for
the delivery of three carriers in 2005 and three in 2006.
In addition BG has entered into a long-term charter for
a further new LNG carrier from March 2003.
