Socially Responsible Investment (SRI)

FTSE4Good and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) are independently defined and researched index series which aim to set an objective global standard for SRI covering:

  • Environmental sustainability

  • Positive relationships with stakeholders

  • Human rights

To qualify for inclusion, a company must meet selection criteria which focus on positive efforts of companies with clear and achievable targets for developing socially responsible policies and practices.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI)

This places BG Group in the top 10% of the oil and gas sector for corporate sustainability. In 2007, the average score for the oil and gas sector was 54% and the best score 77%. BG Group scored 68% (70% in 2006).

FTSE4Good

Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs ranks BG Group as the oil and gas industry leader in its 2006 Environmental, Social and Governance Index (ESG), up from third place in 2005 and eighth place in 2004. The ESG ranks companies in the following categories -  corporate governance, social leadership, social labour, community and investment and environment - using 28 indicators, of which nine are industry specific. The report is compiled using 2002-05 data.

The report finds a strong correlation between leaders in the ESG Index and exposure to new legacy assets which will drive corporate returns in the medium term. The ESG Index is based on published information and information disclosed by the companies in the course of the analysis.
