Social Performance

Social Performance. Establish effective relationships, Avoid and minimise negative impacts, Create value added opportunities

At BG Group, we have fifteen Business Principles that set out the core beliefs, values and behaviours that govern the way we do business.  Social Performance describes the way in which we meet our commitments to society. These principles are:

  • We work to ensure neighbouring communities benefit from our presence
  • We listen to neighbouring communities
  • We support Human Rights within our areas of influence

As with other aspects of our business principles, this involves implementing a rigorous internal control framework for social performance that provides assurance to internal and external stakeholders that we uphold these commitments in all our operations around the world.

As an oil and gas company, our business activities have a significant impact on the communities and societies in which we operate. These impacts can be positive, but they also have the potential to be negative. Through our social performance policy, we aim to avoid or minimise the negative aspects of our business and maximise the benefits that we can bring.  To do this we have developed an internal governance system to provide rigour and clarity to what we do. We focus our activities in three key areas, aiming to:

  • establish and maintain effective relationships with interested and affected stakeholders;
  • Avoid or minimise the negative impacts of our activities; and
  • Create and deliver opportunities that maximise our business benefits to society.

Our Social Performance Standard provides clarity and rigour around our social performance activities. The Standard has been approved by the Group Executive Committee and the Corporate Responsibility Committee as a core requirement for all our business interests across the world.

The Standard is supported by eight accompanying Guidelines, which set out how we should manage our interactions and engagement with host communities on key issues:

  • Socioeconomic Baseline Assessment
  • Impact Assessment
  • Consultation
  • Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement
  • Indigenous Peoples and Vulnerable Groups
  • Cultural Heritage
  • Social Investment
  • Social Performance Plans.
