Training and Development

We offer extensive training. So you’ll have a more defined career path.

We offer some of the best training in the business – our training can even count towards chartered status. But we think the best way to learn is by doing a real job with real responsibility, right from day one. It’s certainly a steep learning curve, but you can also expect plenty of support.

At the beginning of your graduate development programme, a mentor is assigned to you. Your mentor will introduce you to our working culture, show you what’s expected of you and answer any questions – or at least point you in the right direction. They’ll be responsible for your development for the duration of the two year programme, and often beyond.

Although on-the-job coaching and development is the norm, we also run a large number of internal courses. We support study for external qualifications or accreditation, and we have established skills networks where you can learn from – and exchange ideas with – some of the best minds in the industry.

Many of our learning and development resources are available online and accessible from most BG Group offices around the world. If you join us in a technical function, you’ll also have access to an online competency tool. This will allow you to compare your existing knowledge and skills with those required for other roles, so you can better identify any development areas you need to focus on.

Each business area also has its own training and development initiatives:

Business Analysis and Commercial

DIG DEEPER

With the guidance of a supportive management team behind you, you’ll develop a razor-sharp business acumen. You’ll learn how to interpret complex information to correctly evaluate the best opportunities for gas and oil exploration. And you’ll find the most economical way to develop on-shore opportunities such as Liquefied Natural Gas facilities, power stations and domestic supply businesses.

Whilst you’ll develop most through on-the-job learning, we’ll encourage you to undertake a variety of technical training courses over the two year programme. These courses include training on the fundamentals of upstream petroleum economics and risk analysis and the key concepts of the technical side of the business.

As your career develops, you could find yourself in a diverse range of roles, from economics-focused roles such as lead analyst for a business unit, through strategy or market analysis to more commercially-focused roles.

Geoscience Training Alliance

BG Group was a founder member of the Geoscience Training Alliance (GTA), administered by Nautilus (www.nautilusworld.com). It has a current membership of over 40 companies. Nautilus delivers over 150 courses per year in geoscience and engineering, from foundation to advanced level, across North America, Europe and South East Asia. The courses offered are both field and classroom based, and cover every discipline you might come across in your career. The independent nature of Nautilus allows the GTA to secure world leaders in each discipline to teach the courses, and keep them coming back year after year.

During your graduate development programme, you’re likely to see several different aspects of geoscience within BG Group. If you’re undertaking placements in producing assets or new ventures exploration, clastics or carbonates, or are brand new to rock physics and more, then there will be a course to suit you. Most graduates attend three or four GTA courses per year and look for the most appropriate to help them develop in their current placement. After you finish the scheme and become an experienced professional, you’ll still have access to the GTA.

Internal Training Courses

In addition to the GTA, BG Group maintains an active internal training schedule. Introductory courses to BG Group's software suite are regularly run in-house, as well as short half or one day courses run by specialists within BG Group. These courses are very accessible and highly relevant to your role in BG Group.

The geoscience community holds regular forums and workshops to communicate their experiences and findings to colleagues and participation is encouraged from your first day. An annual BG Group Subsurface Forum provides an opportunity for the global geoscience and engineering community to network and share knowledge from their experiences. BG Group's internal technical journal, 'Basin and Reservoir', showcases best practice evaluation and innovation across the subsurface community.
