What made you choose your business area?
I wanted to do geophysics because I've always had a love for geology and physical geography. I wanted to do geophysics within the petroleum industry because you can stay focused on the technical aspects and use the technical expertise you learned at university.
What kind of projects do you get involved in?
My first placement was in Trinidad where I worked in the new ventures team so that was exploration-based. And there I got involved in a regional-mapping project. In my current placement I'm working in UK Upstream. That's in development so I'm doing depth conversion there and looking at 4D sizements. Now I'm in development it's a much finer scale. We’re looking at more metre scale seismic lines as opposed to kilometre scales and doing depth conversion to try and increase the accuracy as opposed to understand the area which is exploration based.
What's the best project you've been involved in?
The best thing about having an international placement is the different culture you get exposed to which I think is great. And for me also to see the geology of the Caribbean which is an area I've never looked at was a terrific experience too. Seeing a different area of geology and a different culture I guess add together to make the experience pretty special and enjoyable.
What do you enjoy most about working at BG Group?
So far, the best thing about working for BG is meeting the different people. Because it's quite small in comparison to some of its competitors you get to meet all different types of people. There are the graduates that you get to know really well and then there are the people much higher up too. You get to know all levels of people within BG and I think that's one of the great things about the company.
What training and development opportunities have you received?
Training and development at BG Group is one of our selling points. Initially you have a parent manager to help plan your career, and then you also have a mentor within the group you're working to help with everyday problems and queries. You're allowed to go on a lot of external training courses which are great. In the past 8 months I've been on 4 or 5 which I’ve learn a lot from. BG Group also have internal courses so there's a lot of training that's constantly going on and it really does help you learn a lot.
What is the BG Group culture like?
I'd say the culture at BG Group is really friendly. It's something I've noticed from the very beginning when I came here as an intern. Even then, everyone was nice to me. They’d come up and introduce themselves no matter how high in the company they were. From the workflows down to how you want your career to progress, it's also really flexible. So I think the relaxedness and flexibility just all add up to make it a nice place to work.
How do you see your future with BG Group?
I'm still just trying to plan the next few placements within my graduate scheme. The way I see it, I can then use those to decide where I want my future to be. By the time I’m finished, I’ll have done four placements – each in a completely different areas of geophysics. So hopefully that'll then give me some idea of where I want to go, be it exploration or development. From other people’s experiences I know that BG Group are very flexible, so within reason I’ll be able to do whatever I want to do.
What advice would you give to graduates thinking of joining BG Group?
I'd say BG Group is a great place to work if you want to travel a lot. And if you want early responsibility you will get it here. What’s more, because the business is relatively small, you get to see the impact of what you do which I think is really rewarding.
