The growth and opportunities available to you within the Company were a real selling point. There are plenty of chances to learn about the different areas of the business, the opportunity to move up in the career ladder and the experience of being part of a growing LNG front runner. What’s more, I wanted to use my degree and expand my knowledge in shipping, which is a part of the overall business, with new challenges every day.

Where do you fit in?

The primary purpose of this position is to co-ordinate and manage the developmental training of BG Group’s seagoing officers, maritime cadets and sponsored students in maritime schools under the goals and objectives of BG Group’s LNG Shipping Management Development Program (SMDP). The role also reviews the training of employees for ongoing development.

What would I need to do your job?

Always expect the unexpected. Flexibility and patience are key characteristics needed for this position. Good communication and relationship building skills have also been important in maintaining the internal/external balance.

And the highlights?

I have had several wonderful experiences since joining BG Group in 2004. The two that stick out most in my mind are attending sea trials of the LNG vessel Methane Alison Victoria and sailing onboard the LNG vessel Methane Rita Andrea for a month to learn more about LNG cargo operations. I have also enjoyed introducing new graduates of the US Maritime Academies to BG Group and the opportunities that it offers.

What’s the work environment like?

Team oriented, with an open forum to ask questions freely and an overall enjoyable environment to work in. Everyone’s willing to share their knowledge and experiences with you and everyone understands that it is important to work hard, but that there needs to be a good work/life balance.
