If You Are Selected For Interview

The interview is the key selection method for BG Group. Many of our interviews are conducted using competency-based questions. This type of interview asks you to draw upon previous experience to illustrate job-relevant behaviours.

The theory of behavioural interviewing is based on the principle that behaviour, past and present, is a good predictor for future behaviour versus what a candidate may say they would do in a given scenario. So, in asking competency-based questions, interviewers are seeking evidence from you to show that you have previously demonstrated the behaviours required in the target role.

The questions will be selected to assess how closely you match the responsibilities and accountabilities of the role in terms of the behaviours, capabilities and mindsets required.

Competency-based questions

Most competency-based questions ask you to describe a situation you have faced in the past.

Interviewers will be looking to gather a comprehensive understanding of:

  • the background information about the situation
  • your specific actions
  • the outcome or result of your actions.

In response to competency based questions, some candidates tend to answer using generalities e.g. "We did this" or "my team did that". Please try to answer the question in relation to what you actually did yourself - after all, we are looking to assess you, not your colleagues or team.

Here are some examples of competency-based questions:

  • Give me a specific example of something you have done recently that has added business value. What impact did it have? Why? How?
  • Tell me about a time when you motivated or inspired others to seek and implement new approaches at work. What specifically did you do or say? What did your actions achieve?
  • Tell me how you won the trust of your internal customers in your current or most recent role. Did you encounter any resistance? Why was this? What did you do about it? What was the result?

You may be assessed using other methods in addition to the interview itself, which might include psychometric testing, in-tray exercises, assessment centres or presentation exercises. Our aim is to use such tests and exercises appropriately as additional tools, so that the individual and the organisation reap maximum benefit from the process.
